Events This Week

Last week, you may have noticed a smiling bunch of SWAT members in Davies while you were enjoying your lunch. They were there as a part of our second annual Sex Positivity Week, a week with events dedicated to safe, healthy, GOOD sex. Sex is something we can be a little shy talking about, but it’s a huge part of a lot of our lives. Sex is a vital piece of health and wellness, so part of the Student WELLNESS Advocacy Team at Student HEALTH Services, we like to talk about it, kind of a lot.

On Monday, our table in Davies focused on services provided by Student Health Services relevant to sexual health. If you didn’t know, SHS is in Crest Wellness Center on upper campus. They provide contraception including the pill, Depo Provera, and condoms. If you do not have health insurance, the lovely staff at SHS can help you sign up for the Family Planning Waiver through Badger Care, and you can get your birth control FOR FREE. They also have emergency contraception for only $25, and it’s usually $50 at drugstores. To schedule an appointment for any of SHS’s great services and to learn more, visit their website at Tuesday, our table focused on sexually transmitted infections. Did you know, according to the CDC, one in EVERY TWO sexually active college students have an STI and most don’t even know it? You can get tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV at SHS for practically nothing, and knowing the status of you and your partner is a critical part of safe sex! Read more about STIs and prevention in our blog post here. Finally, on Wednesday, we had a table dedicated to an awesome organization called Bedsider. Bedsider provides us with a ton of fun goodies you see us handing out, like t-shirts and those silly stickers, but they also have a lot of really great information on their website and a lot of cool, helpful ways for you to stay safe. Check out more at!

Sad you missed out on our exciting, sex positive tables? No fear, there are two great events being put on by the Women’s and LGBTQ Resource Center next week as a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Although SHS promotes safe consensual sex, it’s also important to discuss the fact that on college campuses, not all the sex that’s had is consensual. On Tuesday, April 19 at 3 and 7pm in the Woodland Theater, there will be showings of the film The Hunting Grounds, which brings to light how universities in the United States are sweeping sexual assaults on their campuses under the rug. While the film is troubling, it brings to light the problems we have with victim blaming and rape culture in our society and how sexual assault is a huge problem in college. Each screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Counseling Services at 3 and Amanda Leikness from the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault (CASA) at 7. See the trailer for Hunting Grounds here.

Slut shaming, not cool.

Additionally, part of being sex positive is allowing people to partake in safe, consensual sex without shame. There will also be a showing of the film Unslut on Thursday, April 21 at 7pm in Schofield auditorium. The documentary combats the word “slut” and how problematic it is that we use that word to describe women. The Unslut project aims to fight against sexual bullying and promote sex positivity. Like I said earlier, sex is a big part of our lives, and even if you aren’t having it, we constantly see it on TV, online, and pretty much everywhere we look. All women are affected by the word slut, including those who aren’t sexually active or in monogamous relationships. SWAT loves to say, you can do whatever you want as long as it’s safe and consensual, and part of that is using sex-positive language. Unslut is part of the NightOUT film series, meaning there will be free popcorn, candy, and soda (if you didn’t already have enough reason to go). See the trailer and learn more about The Unslut Project here.

Who wants free condoms?!

Finally, now that the weather is nice and warm, keep your eyes peeled for the Love Wagon! In case you’ve never seen it, SWAT members love to pull around a red, sequin wagon filled with condoms and other sex-positive goodies. We’re so excited for the warm weather and our wagon that if you’re one of the first 5 people to tweet @uwecshs with #lovewagon you’ll get a free Bedsider t-shirt! Stay safe and consensual friends!
