Meet a New SWAT Member

Meet Brooke!

Brooke Boegli

Brooke is a freshman  Marketing Major from Brodhead, Wisconsin. Brooke’s main project with SWAT is social media. Her favorite healthy snack is a  banana with peanut butter. Her favorite way to exercise is the BUTTS AND GUTS! cardio class. If Brooke were a crayon she would be Pixie Powder, and an interesting fact about her is that she has two middle names.

What is S.W.A.T?

The Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) is a group of peer health educators who educate the campus on health and wellness topics such as stress management, sexual health, nutrition, and more.  We are interactive, fun, and can tailor our materials to your group’s needs.  We also do health advocacy work on campus in an effort to make UW-Eau Claire’s campus a healthier place for learning and living.

How did you learn about the job opportunity?

I learned about the job opportunity through the online campus job board. I had no idea what a “Peer Health Educator” was so I clicked on it to learn more.  After reading the job description, I thought, “Hey, I could do this.” So I applied and did not regret it!

What made you want to be a part of the SWAT Team?

I am the odd ball of the group in that my major is not in the health field. As a Marketing Major, I was drawn to the job as an opportunity learn and do something new. I really did not know anything about the topics that they covered, but I was willing to learn.

What does the SWAT team even do?

The SWAT Team promotes health and wellness on our campus through different programs and events. We are known for playing Condom Bingo in the dorms; it is a great way to learn about sexual health and have some fun at the same time! We also facilitate the classes for those found in violation of the alcohol policy in the dorms. Additionally, we present on different health topics such as “Balanced Life” or “Nutrition 101” and many more.

What are the hours like?

One of the best parts about being on the SWAT Team is that the hours are super flexible! You have two office hours once a week, and then programs scattered throughout the week. You get to pick and choose when you want to work based on your schedule for that week.

What is the work environment like?

The other members of the team are awesome, they are so open and welcoming. We have all become good friends and hangout outside of the office. If I have a question on anything I know that I can ask them without judgement. We can deal with some serious stuff, and we handle it in a professional manner, but we also have a lot of fun when it is appropriate.

What is your favorite part about being a part of the SWAT Team?

My favorite part about SWAT other than working with amazing people and learning new things is that I have been able to become involved with the social media and marketing aspect. It allows me to do something related to my major that I really enjoy, while helping promote SWAT at the same time.

Don’t be afraid to apply even if your major is not health related, everyone can find something that they are interested in!
